THE PRODUCTIVE CITY
International Design Competition “Experimental Urban Area in Africa”
Organization: Ambrosetti Foundation, 2011
This design proposal configures an urban settlement, located in the outskirts of Conacry, Guinea. It takes some vernacular features from local tradition – such as the enclosure, the porch, and the hut – and combines them together with new practices of urban recycling, inclusive landscape infrastructures, and sustainable processes of building in order to create new strategies for urban development. The result is a new kind of productive city, located in a resilient landscape, and made up of farms, prefab patio houses, markets, wind turbines, and energy plants, together with the existing scattered houses.
